Dell Vostro A860 NIC and Wi-Fi issues in Ubuntu (Intrepid)
Soon after I had installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my new laptop I realised that something was not well with the networking.
After some research I discovered that the laptop uses the infamous Realtek 8102 device. There is a peculiar problem on dual-boot setups. By default, the Windows driver disables the NIC on shutdown, and by default, the Linux driver does not know how to enable it. On Desktop PCs, the problem can be solved by disconnecting the power. On a laptop you have to unplug the battery. And even then it doesn't always work. The workaround is to tell the Windows driver to enable "Wake-On-Lan after shutdown". My Windows driver didn't have this exact option, but I made an educated guess. Alas, it didn't work straight away. I also had to add NETDOWN=n to /etc/halt . Furthermore, I couldn't connect using Gnome NetworkManager (default in Ubuntu) - the NIC would be detected, but I couldn't ping anything. If I edited /etc/network/interfaces appropriately and disabled NetworkManager's configuration I could access the network. The solution for me was to use wicd instead of NetworkManager.
Next, getting the wi-fi to work (or at least detect networks - I don't actually have a wi-fi access point that I can connect to at the moment). Again, the Atheros 242x wi-fi card is a bit of a bugger, and various recipes exist that suggest various things. I found a forum post which mentions Dell A860 explicitly, so I tried it. It involves installing the MadWifi driver, particularly the ath5k. So, now I can at least scan for wi-fi networks. I may have a chance to try it out on Sunday, when I plan to meet Jerith at Durban International.
